IRON COBRA Lies.

The tour is off!

Take that, world!

Due to financial concerns beyond our control, IRON COBRA has made the difficult decision to cancel our previously upcoming midwestern tour.

Fear not, prairies of Canada, Becky will still be coming to Winnipeg for the improv festival and possibly teaching some clowning and/or awareness workshops.

There are also a few more chances coming up to see IRON COBRA in the greater Toronto area. As for the rest of the world, it would all be a lot easier if you would just quit being so far away.

Canadian Comedy Awards' Voting Open.

After a slight delay, voting opens today at noon for the 2003 Canadian Comedy Awards and our very own Becky "Johnson" Cobra is on the list (in the catagory Female Improvisor).

So if you like Becky's work or are just easily persuaded, go vote.

If you are not a union or guild member you will have to register for a little something called 'the Comedy Association'.

All voting is done through their website at www.canadiancomedyawards.ca. Details on registering for the Comedy Association can be found there as well.

Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award Nomination.

Toronto, September 2004 --

IRON COBRA is pleased to announce their nomination for the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award. Full information about the award, its fund and its background are available via the Tim Sims website.

The full list of nominees has not been officially announced yet but should be within the next few days. However, IRON COBRA happens to know that they are in awfully good company this year.

The gautlet of events for this award includes a couple of shows culminating in the Cream of Comedy show where the award is presented by Lindsay Leese. All performances will be listed on the calendar shortly. Unfortunately for the catch23 crowd, they all fall on Mondays. IRON COBRA understands.

Updates to follow.

catch23 Returning Champeens.

Dear everybody,

Thank you for your narrow votes of support last week. We won, anyway.

This victory, however, did not fall upon us without the delicate talents of the two charming improvisers we dragged onto the stage with us - Peter Stevens and Kevin Gillese. Thank you, gentlemen, your efforts did not go unnoticed.

As a result, we have realized that we do our best work when cowering behind the "skillz" of others and thus have invited Mr. Gillese to join us next Monday. Fear not, Mr. Stevens, your arbitrary time shall come as well.

But this week we summon the power of Gillese to vanquish our foes (a varied and impressive line-up featuring Derek Flores, Rebecca Northan, Kurt Smeaton, Julie Dumais, Alana Johnston and Scott Montgomery)!

Sincerely,

Cobra

Becky Cobra Nominated for Canadian Comedy Award.

September 2004 --

Becky Cobra nominated for Canadian Comedy Award - Best Female Improvisor.

Fairly self-explanatory.

Voting opens September 20th, 2004, and will be run through the CCA website (www.canadiancomedyawards.ca).

Anyone remotely involved with comedy is eligible to vote. So do it. Vote. You can't complain about comedy for the next year unless you are democratically involved in its governance.

The World Has a New Dominator.

September, 2004 --

IRON COBRA (playing as Team Toronto) is bringing home a first place victory from the World Domination TheatreSports Championships hosted by Dad's Garage Theatre Co. in Atlanta, Georgia.

In true competitive fashion, they were aided heavily on stage by their opponents and would like to thank Team Edmonton (Jacob Bannigan, Mark Meer and IRON COBRA founding member Josh Dean) for basically doing all the work for them.

IRON COBRA would also like to thank everyone else especially everyone in Atlanta.

Sep 3, 2004

Furthermore.

IRON COBRA is safe and sound in Atlanta having a great time and has been for a few days now.

Updates have been made to the calendar but the Dad's Garage website is really the best place to look for show and tournament information.

We love you, Atlanta!

World destruction in Atlanta.

Here we go again!

Wish us luck.

Tasman Cody VanRassel.

This just in!

IRON COBRA will be joined by very special guest, Taz VanRassel for both tonight's show at the DK Ranch (9:00pm, 255 College - Studio 3, PWYC) and tomorrow's performance at Lovefest 5000.

Tazzy is great. He is from Vancouver and recently found himself in Toronto to perform at the improv festival with Lucid Dreamers (himself and A.J. Bond).

This should be great. come invest your time.

Aug 20, 2004

Inside the Cyclotron.

IRON COBRA has done something a little spooky and booked an insane raft of shows in the week leading up to our departure for Atlanta.

Please come to all of them.

There is more information on most of these performances below but here is the basic itinerary of doom:

Monday, August 23
catch23 IMPROV
Although not performing as IRON COBRA, Graham will be on stage and Becky will probably be drinking club sodas at the bar until her heart stops. This is a special show because one of our favorite Vancouverites, Tazman Cody VanRassel, will be performing with his cohort A.J. Bond (the Lucid Dreamers).

Tuesday, August 24th
Cabaret at the DK Ranch
Toronto's only rooftop cabaret.
We will be doing some new semi-scripted stuff if we manage to semi-write it by then.
Also featuring Ms. Alex Dallas, cowboy Matt Masters and perennial hosts Derek Flores and Kristian Reimer.

Wednesday, August 23rd
Lovefest 5000
A half-hour improv set to warm the crowd for the first run of Andrew Love's new one-man show.
Full of Love.
Full of Andrew.

Thursday, August 26th
HEXIQUEST!
An Evening of Comedy by David Dineen-Porter

Again, not and IRON COBRA show but we are both in it along with Katie Crown, Chris Gibbs, Levi MacDougall & DDP. This show should be great and somehow...historical.

Aug 18, 2004

We are pieces of meat.

Toronto, August 2004 --

IRON COBRA is hereby dutifully announcing their involvement in Fresh Meat 2004. This annual show has some sort of connection to the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award.

Although the rest of the traditionally massive line-up of beef steaks has not been announced yet, IRON COBRA has it on relatively good authority that Knock Knock. Who's There? Comedy! will be performing as well as Katie Crown doing a solo set.

The show is at the Tim Sims Playhouse
Sunday, September 12th, 2004
8:30pm
IRON COBRA seems to feel this show is free but has little authority or information to support that.

Aug 7, 2004

Back to Atlanta. World Domination.

Toronto, August 2004 --

It's official.

The Cobra shall return to the fair city of Atlanta to defend their wit and humour against the world.

IRON COBRA has been invited to represent Toronto at the World Domination TheatreSports Tournament in Atlanta, Georgia this September.

Teams are currently being confirmed from cities all over the world including Los Angeles, London (the real one), Edmonton, Vienna, Phoenix, Vancouver and, or course, Atlanta.

Aug 2, 2004

Hexiquest! August 26th.

Hexiquest!
-an Evening of Comedy by David Dineen-Porter

DDP made a wish list of his favorite Toronto comic performers to perform his strange and sprawling sketch comedy and all of IRON COBRA made the list.

We will be joined on stage by such local luminaries as Katie Crown, Chris Gibbs, Levi MacDougall and Mr. Dineen-Porter himself to bring this bizarre comedy to life.

DK Ranch. August 24.

To round out a week of performances, IRON COBRA will be doing a set at August's Cabaret at the DK Ranch.

Hosted by funny guys and avid renters, Derek Flores and Kristian Reimer, this is Toronto's only rooftop patio cabaret. Once a tiki torch caught fire and almost blew up Pat Kelly. Also, the cute little girl who lives next store sometimes comes out on her balcony and makes the performers feel guilty about cussing.

Other People's Shows.

This just in!

Two back to back shows announced for August.

In a rare combination of laziness and regard, IRON COBRA aids in supporting the visions of others.

August 25th - IRON COBRA will be doing a hearty set to warm up the stage for the presentation of Andrew Love's new solo show (as directed by Mark Andrada).

August 26th - Graham and Becky will be performing in an evening of comedy written by David Dineen-Porter. The rest of the ensemble includes Katie Crown, Levi MacDougall, Chris "Hilarious" Gibbs and Mr. Dineen-Porter himself.

Both shows at the Tim Sims Playhouse
Second City Toronto
56 Blue Jays Way
info/tickets: 416.343.0011

More details to be announced on both shows. Due to proximity (both general and in relation to these shows) we are trying to set up some discount for seeing both wildly different nights.

Check the calendar for other summer dates.

Jun 15, 2004

Summertime Snakes.

With Graham Cobra vacationing somewhere or other, the COBRA is taking a brief hiatus.

Very brief.

But there are a couple of shows coming up...

catch23 IMPROV - June 5th
Eclectic Circus Character Night 3rd Anniversary Show - August 3rd
and some sort of guest spot on Late Night with the Rumoli Brothers some time during the Fringe (June 30th- July 11th)

Come see.

Also, come to catch23 IMPROV as Graham and/or Becky are performing there pretty much every Monday. Also, some other pretty cool people are there too.

COBRA out.

May 30, 2004

Farewell, Georgia.

Thanks to all of Georgia.

For whatever.

And special thanks to all the Atlantonians who came to see our closing show on Saturday night.

Although we forgot to say it at the show, we are going to take all the (plethora of) unused audience suggestions back to Toronto and dip into them for our audio improvisation sessions.

So, who knows? Maybe your suggestions will pop up months from now. In Canada! In audio!

May 28, 2004

Atlanta Update.

For anyone in the greater Atlanta area who saw our Thursday night show, we have devised an all-new show to close out the festival on Saturday at midnight.

You should probably be there.

All new.

Kinda.

Also, we are pleased to announce that we will be guests of Uncle Gampa's Hoo Dilly Stew on Saturday at 1:00pm at Dad's Garage.

You know, for the kids.

Check it out.

Hoo dilly.

May 14, 2004

The Shobu Show.

From the mind of Deborah Robinson comes The Shobu Show, a crazy new sketch competition.

As clearly as we can tell, it is based on Japanese comedy, hosted in Japanese, and is some kind of comedy fight-to-the-finish.

This will be the first installment.

The line-up (possibly) includes:
Us
The Iliads
Arthur
The Karyn Parsons Project
Sandra B and the Gang
Unky Darryl's House of Sketchola

Hosted By
Kaz & Nobuyoshi

From Deborah:

“Shobu”: to win or to lose; a battle (Japanese).

Toronto’s edgiest comedians battle it out for the title of “Shobu
Champion”. The show features authentic Japanese school girls as judges,
fake fighting monsters, Audience “Shobu” Challenges, and musical
guests.

Thank Yous.

We have a couple thank you's to toss out for this past week's shows.

Thanks to Kevin McLeod for teching our show at the Tim Sims when Angola sprained her neck. Congratulstions on your first show!

Thanks to Ken Ferrell and Graeme Bunton for taping.

And thanks to everyone who came out to the Cobra Benefit show. The boys raised over $500 for the little kickers - that's the sponsorship fee plus a good bit of spoiling cash.

Just for the record, contrary to past information, IRON COBRA did not take any money from the benefit show. C'mon, these are kids.

If you want to see Toronto's fiercest little league team in action (and the only one sponsored by a bunch of rock stars) word on the street is that they can be caught Saturday mornings at Christie Pits Park.

Cobra Benefit. Update.

The line-up as stands is as follows:

Wren City Churches (Musica)
Us (Improv)
The Iliads (Sketch Comedy)
Fever Sheds (More Music)
Katie Crown & Levi MacDougall (Stand-around Comedy)

So, come out and help a bunch of degenerates raise funds to sponsor/spoil a team of 10 year old soccer players. Weird, eh?

The Cobra Benefit Show

Our good friends, the Wren City Churches, have put this rock/comedy/rockedy show together seemingly to sponsor anything with 'Cobra' in their name.

Here, read (from their website):

"The purpose of this event is multiple-fold: it will help send Iron Cobra to the improv games in Atlanta; it will help Wren City Churches and friends sponsor a soccer team of 11-year-olds, to be named (of course) The Cobras; and it will be fun for you.

The bill will include: Iron Cobra, improv-comedy-doing anthropomorphized robots from the future sent back in time to do improv comedy. And us, Wren City Churches. Also, stand-up comedy by James Brylowski. Further: something special from Mike De Eyre - you might know him for his work in The Black Maria, or his neat hair. There might be another band, maybe more comedy, and some short films."
